city of Fort Stockton
Brand Strategy • Branding • Placemaking
Fort Stockton has been an important waypoint for many peoples along many routes over its long and rich history. From nomads on the Comanche Trail, settlers on the frontier, families on I-10, to the adventurers now flocking to Big Bend National Park, Fort Stockton has always been a place for people on a journey.
This presents a great opportunity for the city to showcase its unique appeal to a wide audience, but it also presents a challenge. With Fort Stockton’s interstate exits, business route developments, and historic downtown separated by tracts of land and unactivated space, the average visitor can easily miss much of what makes the place special.
But the city is more than just a place to rest on your way somewhere else, it’s home to a diverse community of people who volunteer their time and effort to create a vibrant and welcoming city. Residents take pride in Fort Stockton, its history, school system, local businesses, performing arts center, and local events. It is unique in the area for its natural water source, the Comanche Springs, which once filled Fort Stockton’s historic swimming pool. The historic fort that gives the city its name provides a unique glimpse into the late 19th century frontier and was home to some of the first African American soldiers in the U.S. Armed Services. As the county seat of Pecos County, Fort Stockton is also home to congressional offices, the county court, and other important institutions in the region.
With these dynamics in mind, Fort Stockton is undertaking a transformation in how it shares its story with visitors and residents alike. This includes the creation of a visual identity that honors history with an eye to the future, features the rugged landscapes and the hometown comforts, and shows travelers Fort Stockton is a lively community that is always ready to welcome new members. With this identity in place, the city can implement communication strategies with unity and purpose, increasing their efficacy and signaling to the broader world that there is more to Fort Stockton.
